Im excited to post some new paintings by Nashville artist Roger Clayton. Roger is easily one of the most prolific artists I know and also someone who has stayed so true to his vision and craft. Ive had the pleasure of working with him since the very first little gallery space opened for TAG back in 2000 and have followed his career, besides the several shows weve had the privilege to exhibit his work in. Talking art, especially art history with Roger is one of my favorite things to do. Hearing him re-live his years in New York during the 80s enthralls me. Ask him about it sometime after youve bought him a Manhattan!
Clayton has this to say about his painting
It is not a stretch to say that the widespread acceptance of Japanese "kawaii" (things cute) images date back to Zen Buddhism and the ancient practice of Shinto. They are a common product from a long cultural and religious past. Their charm is drawn from the seeming simple belief that spirits reside in objects. Any object, natural or manmade that demonstrates such power would hold some esteem. The object is recognizable but never a representation of reality. In the west it might appear as superstition but in the east such objects could remind or return one to their innocent, more pure childlike spiritual self. Such images should delight your senses and poke you with joy. Think of it as the eastern sprit of sensation and not the western body of emotion.
